Poster Contest

Crozer-Keystone and Philadelphia Union Create Delaware County Poster Contest
Through Kicks for Kids Program

March 28, 2014 (Chester, Pa) – Crozer-Keystone Health System and the Philadelphia Union have created a Delaware County poster contest for local students to demonstrate their artistic skills and win tickets for the New England Revolution vs. Philadelphia Union soccer game at PPL Park on May 17. A total of 50 tickets will be awarded by Crozer-Keystone to 13 talented students and their families, through the Philadelphia Union’s Kicks for Kids program.

This contest is open to all Delaware County students between the ages of 7 to 12, as of May 17. The students will be judged in three age divisions (7-8, 9-10, 11-12), and are asked to create a poster with the theme of “Soccer, Health and Community.” Posters can not be larger than 18” X 24” and only markers, pens, crayons and/or pencils are to be used. All completed posters should have a label placed in the lower right hand corner with the child’s name, child’s gender, age as of May 17, school, parent’s name(s), and contact phone number.

All posters should be dropped off in the main lobby of the Crozer Medical Plaza at Brinton Lake, 300 Evergreen Drive, Glen Mills, Pa, between March 28 and April 25, in a bin marked “Delaware County Poster Contest.” The Medical Plaza is open Monday to Thursday from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Friday from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., closed Saturday and Sunday. If you are unable to drop off the poster at the Crozer Medical Plaza, you may scan the poster to ckhspublicrelations@crozer.org.

During the week of April 28, Crozer-Keystone will determine the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th place winners for each of the three age divisions plus one honorable mention student.  A parent for each of the thirteen students will be contacted and arrangements will be made to provide four tickets to the May 17 game for each winner, and two tickets for the honorable mention student. The winning artwork along with the names of the students will be posted on the social media sites and websites for both Crozer-Keystone and the Philadelphia Union during the month of May.

Kicks for Kids is a national marketing platform through Major League Soccer that enables teams to develop community outreach programs with corporate partners. The Philadelphia Union launched this program in 2014 with Crozer-Keystone as the first corporate partner. In addition to the Delaware County poster contest winners, Crozer-Keystone has agreed to donate additional 2014 Philadelphia Union tickets for local organizations that include: Soccer for Success, Boys & Girls Club of Chester, Wellness Center at Community Hospital, Unionville Recreational Association, Drexel Hill Raiders, and Kids Asthma Management Program.

January is National Blood Donor Month

Blood is usually in short supply during the winter months due to the holidays, travel schedules, bad weather and illness. January, in particular, is a difficult month for blood centers to collect donations. Poor turnouts can put our nation’s blood supply at a critical low. The AABB (formerly known as the American Association of Blood Banks), along with America’s Blood Centers, is dedicated to increasing public awareness of the importance of voluntary blood donation. Every day in the United State, blood is needed in hospitals to care for patients with cancer and other diseases, for organ transplant recipients, and to help save the lives of accident and trauma victims. Every two seconds, someone in the U.S. needs blood.

Facts About Blood:

• More than 38,000 blood donations are needed each day.
• Blood can be separated into at least three components: red blood cells, plasma, and platelets.
• Just one blood donation can help save up to three lives.
• 60% of the U.S. population is eligible to give blood, but only 5 % actually donate.
• Blood and blood products are perishable. Donated red blood cells must be used within 42 days of collection

A blood donation truly is a “gift of life” that a healthy individual can give to others who are sick or injured.

Continue your holiday giving and donate now!

To learn more about blood donation visit www.aabb.org. To find areas in your community where you can donate blood, visit https://www.membersforlife.org/pennj/schedule/bdc_zip.php to search by zip code.

March is National Nutrition Month®

Crozer-Keystone Health System is proud to join the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics during March in celebrating National Nutrition Month®. This year’s National Nutrition Month theme is “Eat Right, Your Way, Every Day” and encourages consumers to develop a healthful eating plan that incorporates individual food choices and preferences.

Here are a few ways to “Eat Right, Your Way, Every Day” from the food and nutrition experts at the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics:

·         Personalize your eating style: The easiest way to get the nutrients your body needs is to eat healthy foods you enjoy. Finding good-for-you foods that please your taste makes eating healthfully special and exciting.
·         Eat for your lifestyle: Athletic, vegetarian/vegan, corporate and family lifestyles all have special nutritional needs, but eating right can be easy and tasty with attention to those foods that best help get you through the day.
·         Incorporate cultural and ethnic traditions: Foods from around the globe often incorporate an abundance of unique, flavorful and nourishing ingredients. Keep traditions alive and bring the world to your family’s table.
·         Keep health concerns in mind: A healthful eating plan can help prevent and treat a variety of health concerns. With some changes to recipes and a little self-control, you can still enjoy many of your favorite foods while meeting your nutritional needs and health goals.
·         Make MyPlate your plate: Fill half of your plate with your favorite fruits and vegetables; keep protein portions lean and about three ounces; make at least half of your grain choices whole grains; and be sure to include low-fat or fat-free dairy.

As part of this public education campaign, the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics’ National Nutrition Month website ( http://www.eatright.org/nnm/)  includes a variety of helpful tips, fun games, promotional tools and nutrition education resources, all designed to spread the message of good nutrition around the “Eat Right, Your Way, Every Day” theme.
