Fireworks Safety Tips to Ensure a Safe July Fourth

Fireworks on the Fourth of July are as American as apple pie. Carol Cunningham, MD, Emergency Medicine Physician at Akron General Health System urges using common sense when it comes to handling fireworks to celebrate our country's birthday.

On average, about 200 people every day go to the emergency department with fireworks-related injuries around the 4th of July holiday, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). More than half the injuries were burns.

For example, a sparkler can burn at 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit - which is as hot as a blow torch. Almost half (41 percent) of fireworks injuries are to a person's hands, fingers or arms.

One-third (38 percent) of them are to a person's eyes, head, face and ears (CPSC). If fireworks are legal in your community, The American College of Emergency Physicians strongly suggests that you do not use fireworks at your home.

If you do use them, however, these do's and don'ts will help make it a safer experience.
  • DO - Have knowledgeable supervision by an experienced adult if you choose to use fireworks.
  • DO - Buy fireworks from reputable dealers.
  • DO - Read warning labels and follow all instructions.
  • DO - Keep a bucket of water or fire extinguisher on hand.
  • DO - Light fireworks one at a time, then move back quickly.
  • DO - Dispose of all fireworks properly.
  • DON'T - Give any fireworks, including sparklers, to small children; older children should be supervised by a responsible adult.
  • DON'T - Light fireworks indoors or near other objects.
  • DON'T - Place your body over a fireworks device when trying to light the fuse and immediately back up to a safe distance after you light it.
  • DON'T - Point or throw fireworks at another person, ever.
  • DON'T - Try to re-light or pick up malfunctioning fireworks.
  • DON'T - Wear loose clothing while using any fireworks.
  • DON'T - Set off fireworks in glass or metal containers - the fragments can cause severe injury.
  • DON'T - Carry fireworks in a pocket.
"The safest and only thing you should do is watch a professional fireworks display managed by experts who have proper training and experience handling these explosives," says Dr. Cunningham.

Upper Darby Township will host their annual Fireworks show on July 3 (rain date July 5) at 9:30 PM at Upper Darby High School Memorial Field. Admission is $4.00.

Titanoboa: Monster Snake Opens Feb.14 at the Academy of Natural Sciences

Live snakes, like this ball python which is closely related to a boa constrictor, will be part of the Titanoboa: Monster Snake exhibit.

PHILADELPHIA (Jan. 14, 2014) - Slithering in at 48 feet long and weighing an estimated one-and-a-half tons, the world's largest snake-a realistic replica of it, that is-will be on exhibit at the Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University starting Saturday, Feb. 14.

From deep underground in a Colombian coal mine, in a layer dating to 65 million years ago, scientists have uncovered remains of the largest snake that ever roamed the planet, Titanoboa cerrejonensis. Measuring 48 feet long and weighing 2,500 pounds, this massive predator grew as long as a school bus and weighed as much as a small car. Twice as long as the longest snake alive today, Titanoboa could crush and devour a crocodile.

Fossil plants and animals found at the site reveal that Titanoboa roamed the earliest known rain forest, teeming with life and dating to the Paleocene, the lost world that followed the demise of the dinosaurs.

"Titanoboa is a bigger, badder boa, and it will simply knock your socks off," says Academy Director of Exhibits Jennifer Sontchi. "The exhibit opens on Valentine's Day, so be sure to bring your main squeeze!"

Titanoboa: Monster Snake, on view through Sunday, April 19, delves into the stories of the discovery, reconstruction and implications of this enormous reptile. Visitors will:

*         Stand eye-to-eye with a full-scale model of this massive predator.

*         Examine model vertebrae to compare Titanoboa with a modern anaconda.

*         Crawl the length of Titanoboa in the Titanoboa Challenge. There also is a shorter crawl-through tunnel for young children.

*         See live snakes from the Academy's collection.

*         Learn about venom, fangs and scales from the educators at the Carts of Curiosity.

*         Enjoy a Smithsonian documentary about Titanoboa in the mini-theater (every hour on the hour)

*         See snake specimens from the Academy's Herpetology Collection.

*         Learn about the important role snakes play in our lives.

There is a $3 fee to enter Titanoboa: Monster Snake in addition to regular museum admission.

The opening weekend, Feb. 14 and 15, coincides with the Academy's annual Paleopalooza<http://www.ansp.org/get-involved/programs/festivals/paleopalooza/> festival, which features a variety of fun family activities, fossil displays, films, talks, and the chance to meet Academy paleontologists. The 1 p.m. live animal show that weekend is "Snakes Alive!," which showcases some of the museum's live snakes, plus close-ups on a giant screen. For details about Paleopalooza, visit http://bit.ly/1w5SoIY.

On Thursday, Feb. 26, "Anaconda" will be the feature presentation at the Academy's popular Mega-Bad Movie Night.<http://www.ansp.org/Visit/Events/Details/?eid=5704&iid=17797> For information and tickets, visit http://bit.ly/1x4yWMU.

USCIS Honors Military Veterans During Naturalization Ceremonies

Release Date: November 08, 2013

WASHINGTON—In recognition of Veterans Day, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) will conduct naturalization ceremonies across the country that will feature military members, military spouses and veterans taking the Oath of Allegiance to become U.S. citizens. From Nov. 7-13, USCIS is welcoming approximately 8,000 new U.S. citizens during 120 naturalization ceremonies throughout the nation and overseas.
Since September 2002, USCIS has naturalized more than 92,000 members of the military, including nearly 11,000 who received their citizenship overseas.
“Throughout our history, thousands of immigrants have made extraordinary sacrifices for this country through military service,” USCIS Director Alejandro Mayorkas said. “These men and women pledged to defend our nation to protect liberties they had yet to secure for themselves. We salute all our veterans for helping to preserve this nation as a beacon of hope and opportunity.”
USCIS’s Veterans Day celebration will feature a Nov. 13 naturalization ceremony at the Women in Military Service for America Memorial at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia. During this event, Acting Secretary of Homeland Security Rand Beers will administer the Oath, and USCIS Deputy Director Lori Scialabba will recognize Dr. Rahul Jindal, a transplant surgeon at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Md., as an Outstanding American by Choice.
Other ceremony highlights include events at:
  • Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hall and Museum in Pittsburgh on Nov. 8;
  • Kandahar Airfield in Afghanistan on Veterans Day (Nov. 11);
  • Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas, on Veterans Day (Nov. 11); and
  • The Old State House in Hartford, Conn., on Nov. 13.
Additionally, five recruits will become new citizens at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San Diego through the Naturalization at Basic Training Initiative. USCIS developed this program with the Department of Defense to allow noncitizen military enlistees to complete the naturalization process during basic training. Previously, it could prove challenging to naturalize active duty members of the armed services who may have been deployed to locations around the world.
USCIS invites new citizens and their families and friends to share their experiences from the ceremonies through Twitter using the hashtag #newUScitizen.
For more information on USCIS and its programs, please visit www.uscis.gov or follow us on Twitter (@uscis), YouTube (/uscis), Facebook (/uscis), and the USCIS blog The Beacon.

Spoken Hands at the Upper Darby Performing Arts Center

Spoken Hand

The world music percussion ensemble, Spoken Hand, brings its pulsating rhythms to Upper Darby Performing Arts Center March 22

Known for its high-energy live performances, the acclaimed percussion orchestra blends North Indian tabla, Afro Cuban bata, Brazilian samba and West African djembe in an exhilarating evening of traditional and contemporary drumming and choral compositions

DREXEL HILL, PA – March 6, 2012 – The acclaimed world music percussion ensemble, Spoken Hand, blends the pulsating rhythms of North Indian tabla, Afro Cuban bata, Brazilian samba and West African djembe in an exhilarating evening of traditional and contemporary drumming and choral compositions. The high-energy performance takes place at Upper Darby Performing Arts Center on March 22 at 7:30pm.

Tickets are $7-$10 and UDPAC members save $1 off each ticket. Tickets may be purchased online at www.udpac.org or by calling the box office: 610. 622.1189. Upper Darby Performing Arts Center is located at 601 North Lansdowne Avenue in Drexel Hill, PA. The 1,600 seat theater is just minutes from the Main Line and Center City Philadelphia and offers free parking. The performance is one hour and appropriate for all family members ages seven and over.

A celebration of polyphonic rhythms, Spoken Hand unifies four percussion batteries into one distinct voice. Since its inception over fifteen years ago this uniquely robust orchestra of percussionists has traveled the road to perform giving drums their individual voices.  Linking the past and present, the sacred and secular with a symphonically textured fusion of traditional and contemporary drumming and choral compositions, Spoken Hand has twice earned the title of “Best World Music/Roots Performance” by Philadelphia City Paper, and continues to share this cultural musical experience with audiences far and wide.

Artistic Director Daryl Kwasi Burgee recently interviewed on WHYY TV discussed formulating Spoken Hand. “The drum is always in accompaniment to something else. And I realized that most people aren’t aware of the harmonic and the melodical aspects of the drum. Giving people the opportunity to experience that in a collage of melody and sound, that’s what this project was all about. It was the opportunity to give the drummer voice.”

The four corners of the world are represented as Spoken Hand fills the stage with percussionists who blend the rhythmic Afro-Cuban, Brazilian, North Indian, and West African sounds in an artistic mission to share with audiences their passion for music.

The Upper Darby Performing Arts Center and Upper Darby Summer Stage are jointly sponsored by the Upper Darby School District Board of School Directors and Upper Darby Township Mayor and Council through the Department of Recreation and Leisure Services.
