2013 Alcohol, Tobacco, and Other Drug Awareness (ATOD)   Poster Contest!           On behalf of the Delaware County Office of Behavioral Health, Division of Drug and Alcohol Programs, Holcomb Behavioral Health Systems is excited to announce the 25th annual Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drug Awareness Student Poster Contest, a countywide contest for all Delaware County students in grades Kindergarten through 8th grade. The goal of this contest is to encourage all students to value healthy lifestyles and think about the consequences of alcohol, tobacco and other drug use. This tradition is a wonderful way to reinforce school's prevention programming by involving students in a countywide effort. Thank you to all the schools/organizations who submitted posters for the 2012 poster contest! Over 1,000 posters were received!                                                                                    Following the submission deadline, which is Monday, March 4, 2013, fifteen winning posters will be cumulatively chosen by health professionals and the public through a voting system. In April, the Awards Ceremony will be conducted for the fifteen winners during a County Council Meeting at the Delaware County Government Center in Media.  Each student winner will be recognized by County Council Members, representatives of the Office of Behavioral Health, and by Holcomb Behavioral Health Systems. Following the awards ceremony, each winner will be mailed their VISA Giftcard award, which range in denomination from $75 to $200. The winning posters, along with headshots of the winning students, will be featured in the 2014 Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drug Awareness Calendar. This year's poster contest deadline is Monday, March 4, 2013. Crozer-Keystone Cardiovascular Days

Crozer-Keystone Health System is dedicated to reducing heart disease, vascular disease and stroke in the communities they serve. That is why they offer comprehensive “Cardiovascular Day” health fairs at four of their hospitals. Each of these events will provide free glucose/cholesterol screenings, blood pressure screenings, stroke risk assessments and healthy information and activities provided by a range of Crozer-Keystone departments.

 

Cholesterol and glucose screenings will take place from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Fasting is required with nothing to eat or drink past midnight.

The event will take place in Meeting Rooms A & C at Delaware County Memorial Hospital on Monday, February 25, 2013. The Health Fair is from 11 a.m. to noon. Heart Health Lunch and Learn will be offered at noon featuring a DCMH cardiologist. Lunch will be provided to all participants.

High School to Host District-wide Read Across America Night

Upper Darby High School will be hosting a District-wide Read Across America event on Monday, March 4, 2013 from 6:00-7:30 PM in the gymnasium.  There will be fun games and activities for Upper Darby community residents in grades K-5 and their parents.  The event is free of charge, and all in the community are invited to attend.

This is free 6-session group led by experts who understand why you smoke.  The program uses a positive behavioral change approach that teaches you how to become a non-smoker for good.

For many smokers, especially those who have tried to quit before, group support can make the difference in helping to stay smoke-free.

FREE NICOTINE REPLACEMENT THERAPY is available to those who qualify.

Sessions will be held at The Upper Darby Municipal Branch Library located at 501 Bywood Avenue, Upper Darby.  This session begins on Thursday, February 21, 2013 at 5:30 PM.
